On Being Laid Back
One of my teachers told me today that I seemed like a really "laid back" girl. She meant it as a compliment, which is nice. I get that a lot. People think being low key comes easy to me, and maybe it does, now. I learned to deal with just about everything when we moved here in the fourth grade. I'm biracial, or really, multiracial! My Mom is African American and Native American, and my Dad is white and African American. We were the first "mixed" family to move in our neighborhood, and it was hard at first.

My friends and I laugh because when we have to fill out forms where it lists "ethnicity" there's never enough space or the right box to check. We're all multiracial--in fact if you saw us you would never be able to guess who was what. I like it, though. We're the most unusual looking group in our school.

It's hard when you have to be first at anything. My mom is from India but very dark skinned, and when she came to the U.S. no one could figure out where she was from--as if it matters. She taught me to look people in the eye when they ask where I'm from and say, "Massachusetts."

When people give you a hard time about something, I don't think it goes away for good, really. I got teased in elementary school, too, and it still makes me feel bad.
