Red Carpet Rookies:
An Interview
With Dakota Fanning,
Star of DREAMER Inspired By A True Story
By Kelsey (age 14) and Veronica (age 17), Angeles Girl Scout Council
Kelsey and Veronica are two lucky Girl Scouts from Los Angeles, California, who were picked to attend a premiere of DREAMER Inspired By A True Story (DreamWorks) and interview its 11-year-old star, Dakota Fanning. Get an insider's look at one of the most powerful actresses in Hollywood and the business of Hollywood media.
Dakota: Preteen Powerhouse
Both Veronica and Kelsey really enjoyed the movie, DREAMER Inspired By A True Story. The next day, the girls fueled up on the hotel's continental breakfast (yum!) to prepare for their interview with Dakota Fanning (wow!).
Veronica: The first thing I did was introduce myself to Dakota and compliment the shirt she was wearing (it had a little picture of a horse, which seemed appropriate since Dreamer was about a horse). When I first started asking questions, I was a little nervous. But Dakota's calm answers took a lot of the pressure off me and I began to relax. During the interview, Dakota seemed just like a regular 11-year-old girl. Dakota was very nice to interview and I wish her the best in her acting career—she has proven to be a true Hollywood star.
Kelsey: Veronica and I attended a "press junket" where journalists come to interview the stars about their movie. We were the first on the list to interview Dakota. She was awesome—so friendly and pretty. I asked her about her dreams, she said she would like to continue acting and someday be a director. It was fun talking to her because even though she is a big movie star, she is also just a kid like me.
What Dakota, Veronica, and Kelsey talked about: Dakota told the girls how excited she is about her work in Dreamer. She said she felt it was a good family movie. Dakota had to do a lot of training with horses to prepare for the movie—and admitted to falling off the horse once. Because she likes to ride horses and has one of her own named Goldie, Dakota really related to her character's love of horses.
Round 'n' Round We Go
After the interview with Dakota Fanning, the girls got to go into a "round table interview" with other journalists from various newspapers. At a round table, journalists take turns asking actors different questions about the movie or the training they did for it.
Veronica: I had no idea what a round table was so that was very new to me. I didn't ask any questions; I just listened and observed how professional journalists do their job. Watching them was a very good learning experience, especially their technique of note taking. Their questions were a little different from the kind that I asked Dakota Fanning but it was still great to hear their questions and to participate. I was glad to participate because it helped me understand the hard work that goes on behind making a film, from the training of animals to the organizing of press releases. It was a lot of fun!
Kelsey: After interviewing Dakota, we moved on to the round table discussions" where we talked with other stars, the director, and the horse trainer. I thought the horse trainer was very interesting. This was such a great experience. Even though I am only 14, I felt very grown up. It made me think about my own dreams and that if you work hard and believe in yourself, anything is possible.
