ELKS National Foundation 2007 Most Valuable Student Scholarship Application Tips
By Melissa Algranati, staff writer
Want a shot a getting a piece of the over $2.2 million scholarship pie? Check out these 10 helpful tips to help make your 2007 Most Valuable Student scholarship application a success.
- Start the application process early. Find your local ELKS Lodge and contact the scholarship chairperson for drop-off times. If you have difficulty finding your local lodge, contact scholarships@elks.org or call 773-755-4732.
- Read the instructions carefully. Each scholarship wants your information presented in a specific way. Treat each scholarship application as a unique opportunity to earn money.
- Don't forget to make copies. The application becomes property of the Elks Foundation and will not be returned to you. It is important to keep your own copy for future reference.
- Make it easy for the judges. The judges prefer that you place your completed application in a folder. Don't use any staples or paperclips.
- It's OK to ask questions. Any questions regarding this opportunity should be directed to the Elks National Foundation. You can contact them at scholarship@elks.org or 773-755-4732.
- Play up your advantage—Girl Scouts. A major focus of this scholarship is leadership and that is what Girl Scouts is all about. Share your Girl Scout leadership honors from community service to earning your Girl Scout Silver and Gold Award.
- Spell it out. In your mind, everyone should know what Vanderbilt's student leader of the month is all about or what it means to be a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient. By assuming the judges have knowledge they don't, you may not be highlighting your credentials to the best of your ability.
- Be selective. Make sure you select honors and activities that highlight the qualities that the scholarship is looking for and reflect the person you are. Your list of activities should not extend beyond the space provided. It is not important to list everything you have done; instead list the honors and activity that make the best impact.
- Choose your recommendation carefully. A strong recommendation can make the difference. Make sure you pick someone who can speak to your qualities in a powerful way that the scholarship is looking for.
- Say it with style. When writing your essays, correctness and style are vital. Your writing is the best way you have to capture interest and "sell" yourself as the best qualified applicant. Neatness, spelling and grammar count, so check and check again. Ask several individuals whose judgment you respect to read and critique a draft of your essay before you submit your final application.
