Round the Way Girl
By Jessica, National Advisory Committee Member
My family is pretty normal.
I live with my mom, dad, and my younger brother. We have two dogs and a cat. We used to have a hedgehog, but he died—maybe that's not really normal.
In the City
The first house I lived in was a split-level in a city. It was fun growing up playing kick-the-can and baseball with the neighborhood kids. When I moved, I discovered a whole new world. Now we live on 10 acres of woods in a little, tiny farm town.
Movin' Out and Around
It was tough moving from the city to a small town, but that wasn't the only challenge I had to wrap my mind around. I was the new kid in town and had moved into a dome house. What's a dome house? It's a house that's totally round. That's right! There are no angles, no squares, and no corners to put your dirty clothes in.
Dome Life
My favorite room is our living/dining room. There aren't any walls, but the ceiling starts at the floor and continues in the dome to the other side. There are six triangle windows arranged in a hexagon. They provide most of the light for the room. During the winter they are covered with snow, and in the summer the tree branches surround them.
My favorite time is late at night during thunderstorms. The lightening fills the darkness with explosions of light. It's beautiful.
My bedroom is shaped kind of like a piece of pie. It has two straight walls and one curved wall. The space is filled up with my bed, dresser and desk. I have a hexagon window next to my bed that I absolutely love. I share my room with my cat, because the dogs own the rest of the house.
Local Attraction
When you're living in the round, it's not easy to be anonymous. There are only about two thousand people in my town, so everyone knows where my house is. Most people have been inside sometime since it was built twenty years ago and the person who used to own it was pretty popular. Then again, maybe it's just the house itself. When a house is this unique, word gets around.
