Latina Focus: Lupita
Hispanic Heritage Month

Meet Lupita, host of a Spanish language radio show "Sabados Latinos" at her university in Missouri.

This life-long Girl Scout wrote about how girls can use Girl Scouting to acculturate themselves when they arrive, as well as a way to celebrate their heritage. She offered input on cultural patches that exist at the local council as well as the national level, e.g. World Thinking Day, etc. Lupita visited Spanish-speaking troops while she was in town to give them her support and to provide them insight on how to best reach Latina girls.

Lupita also used her green thumb to help the poor. She planted an organic garden and then donated the produce to local homeless shelters. Lupita did not stop there—she was involved with many activities centering on healthy living and teaching girls self-esteem and even an etiquette class. Her congeniality helped her when she was crowned Miss Missouri Latina in 1995. Lupita uses all the skills she fine-tuned at Girl Scouts to strengthen the role of Latinas in her community, as well as bringing Girl Scouting to a greater Hispanic population. Her kindness and eloquence will make her someone to watch for years to come.
