Question
Dear Dr. M & Liz,
I got myself into a dance competition, and my dance partner is this really cute guy. We haven't practiced yet, and I am really nervous! Help! Please!
—Jessica, 17, Mississippi

Advice
Dear Jessica,
While your dance partner's looks might be distracting at first, try to focus on learning the steps and having fun. You might want to think about your situation this way: you'll be motivated to spend lots of time practicing, which will certainly help when you dance in the competition. By the way, congratulations for getting into the competition, and I hope you do well!
—Dr. M

Dear Jessica,
Congratulations on getting into the dance competition! I participated in a few competitions with my high school dance team, and I know from experience that practice is really the most important thing. Once you think you have your dance down, ask some friends or family to critique your dance. Or you can have someone videotape it so that you and your partner can see all the things that you're doing right and wrong. It can sometimes be excruciating to watch, but it really helps. And most importantly, have fun performing in the competition!
