Question
Dear Dr. M & Liz,
If your parents broke up and you don't like your dad's girlfriend, what would you do?

—Teena, 13, Mississippi

Advice
Dear Teena,
You may be having a hard time accepting your dad's girlfriend because you feel that by doing so, you're betraying your mom. Be assured that you're not doing that, but since this woman is now part of your dad's life, you should treat her with respect even if you don't like her. Your relationship with your dad will be easier if you're open to the relationship he has with his girlfriend.
—Dr. M

Dear Teena,
Be sure you've given your dad's girlfriend a fair chance. Try to get to know her and keep in mind that she's not trying to replace your mom. If you still don't like her, then talk to your dad about your feelings. But don't expect him to break up with her because of how you feel about her.
—Liz
