  Parents
Question
Dear Dr. M,
What do I do if my parents are getting a divorce, and I feel like the parent who has to watch my brother, sister, and older grandmother (who lives with us)? I'm only twelve.
—Britany, 12, Florida

Advice
Dear Britany,
It's tough enough that your parents are getting divorced, but you have the additional burden of having to take care of your siblings and grandmother. Keep in mind that the situation is probably temporary—your parents are very preoccupied right now with their own emotional and maybe financial issues so they're not paying as much attention to the rest of the family. As your mom and dad get used to their new situation, they should be able to take back the parent role once again. If the situation doesn't ease up for you in a short time, talk to them about your feelings and how you're being affected by the divorce. Let your parents know that you don't mind helping out at home, but you may need to remind them that, as you told me, you're "only twelve."
