Question
Dear Dr. M & Liz,
I am in eighth grade and my friend always gets all the attention. When we have a solo tryout, she always gets the part because she is in our school plays. But I am a really good singer, and she isn't as good all the time. Can you give me advice on how to be more confident in getting a part I want when my teacher is not fair to everyone about getting parts?

—Annoyed, 13, Illinois

Advice
Dear Annoyed,
Maybe one of the reasons your friend is getting parts is because the school plays she's been in have given her confidence and experience. You need to build up both. Talk to the teacher who's in charge of assigning parts and ask what you can do to better prepare yourself. Let her know how much you want to appear in the next play. Also, look for opportunities to sing and act outside of school—maybe at a youth group or club meeting or even a family get-together. Ask for honest feedback and use that information to get better. And keep trying out.

Dear Annoyed,
The best way to feel confident when you're auditioning is to practice a lot beforehand. If you know your song really well, your teacher will be able to see that you're a really good singer, and she will be more likely to give you a part.
