Question
Dear Dr. M & Liz,
There is this guy that likes me and every time he comes close enough to talk, my best friend tells him to go away. I know she is trying to protect me, but I don't like how bossy and controlling she is. I still want her to be my friend, but how can I tell her how I feel?

—Marlene, 13, California

Advice
Dear Marlene,
Your best friend might be a little jealous. She might be thinking that if you get closer to the guy who likes you, you'll have less time for her. Reassure her by letting her know how important she is to you, but that you also need to make time for other people in your life, including this guy you have feelings for.
—Dr. M

Dear Marlene,
It's important for you to tell your friend how you feel, but, for the sake of your friendship, you should probably leave out the part about her being bossy and controlling. You can say that you appreciate that she's trying to help and protect you, but you think you'll be able to take care of yourself.
—Liz
