Dear Dr. M & Liz,
I'm 14 and I still haven't shaved my legs. My legs aren't hairy and the hairs are a very light color, but sometimes I feel like people are staring at my legs. Is it OK not to shave at my age? It's seems like such a hassle to deal with. Please help.
—Malia, 14, Hawaii

Dear Malia,
It's okay to shave, and it's also okay not to shave. The decision should be based on what you're comfortable with. Are you sure people are really staring at your legs because of the hair? If your leg hair is light, it's probably not very noticeable. When and if you decide that you'd like your legs to be hairless, you have several options besides shaving, including waxing or using a depilatory.

Dear Malia,
If your leg hair is very light, then there isn't much of a need to shave. Some people prefer to shave even if the hair isn't very dark because they like their legs to feel smooth, but if that doesn't bother you, then there's no reason to go through the trouble of shaving. Plus, people probably aren't staring at your legs—it just seems that way because you're self-conscious about it.
—Liz
