Question
Dear Dr. M,
What age do girls start shaving their legs? My legs are hairy and my mom won't let me shave yet.
—Tiffany, 11, California

Advice
Dear Tiffany,
If you've begun to notice that the hair on your legs is thicker and darker now, it's probably because you're going through puberty. Your mom may see shaving as a sign that you're no longer a little girl, and she may not be ready for that. Girls start shaving their legs at different ages—some start at 11, others not until they're 15. Some girls don't bother shaving at all, preferring the natural, unshaved look. If you feel right now that you'd feel more comfortable if your legs were shaved, let your mom know that. Tell her that you'd feel more confident about your appearance if she'd give you permission to shave your legs. Whenever you do start shaving, ask someone who's had experience to give you some tips about how to do it safely.
